A punchy 15km race segment that is part of it's parent race, the Elk Valley Ultra. This route offers a challenging and scenic trail through Fernie Alpine Resort to enjoy alpine views under the grandeur of the Lizard Headwall

Course Route

Route will be updated for 2027 because of new lift construction at Fernie Alpine Resort. Stay tuned for updates.

Course starts at the base area of Fernie Alpine Resort and winds up some of the less frequently used single track on some known winter ski runs. Expect a double track start, some steep climbs, an exposed and rugged section below the Headwall, and beautiful views.

All racers can indulge in the bottomless brunch available after crossing the finish line. We’ve been told that it’s a top reason why racers and volunteers come back…

Saturday July 24 – Fernie (Start/Finish)

10 AM - 5PM Late Registration for Headwall Hustle at the Start/finish Area of the Elk Valley Ultra

Sunday July 25 - Fernie Alpine Resort Plaza

7-7:30AM: Final Call for Bib Pickup
8AM: RACE START
11AM: Awards

FAQs

What is the course like?

The course occurs entirely on Fernie Alpine Resort property. Expect wide cat tracks and open runs, narrow trails winding through brush, and rocky alpine sections above the top of the chair lifts. Some sections have uneven footing and require extra caution.

What gear do I need to race?

We recommend carrying a minimum of 1L of water. There is a water station at the top of the loop to replenish. We also recommend fuel/electrolytes, an emergency blanket, a lightweight jacket and bear spray. Be sure to save room for your bottomless brunch at the finish line!

Where should I stay in Fernie?

Summer is a busy time in town so we’d advise looking into accommodation early! There are places to stay right at Fernie Alpine Resort as well as camping options nearby. Check out nearby Mount Fernie Provincial Park, the Stanford, Snow Valley Lodging or the Fernie Fox or on mountain accommodations such as Lizard Creek Lodge and Slopeside Lodge. We are 1 hr drive from Cranbrook and the Crowsnest Pass, and 30 min from Sparwood.
